कर्णवधोत्तरं शल्य-दुर्योधनसंवादः

Aftermath of Karṇa’s Fall: Śalya’s Address to Duryodhana

“तुमने द्वैतववनमें जो यह सत्य वचन कहा था कि “मैं एकमात्र रथके द्वारा युद्ध करके कर्णको मार डालूँगा' उस प्रतिज्ञाको तोड़कर कर्णसे भयभीत हो भीमसेनको छोड़कर आज तुम रणभूमिसे लौट कैसे आये? ।। इदं यदि द्वैतवने5प्यचक्ष: कर्ण योद्धुं न प्रशक्ष्ये नूपेति वयं ततः: प्राप्तकालं च सर्वे कृत्यान्युपैष्याम तथैव पार्थ,'पार्थ! यदि तुमने द्वैतवनमें यह कह दिया होता कि “राजन! मैं कर्णके साथ युद्ध नहीं कर सकूँगा” तो हम सब लोग समयोचित कर्तव्यका निश्चय करके उसीके अनुसार कार्य करते

sañjaya uvāca | tvayā dvaitavane yad idaṁ satyavacanaṁ proktaṁ—“aham ekamātrena rathena yuddhvā karṇaṁ mārayiṣyāmi” iti—tāṁ pratijñāṁ bhittvā karṇāt bhayabhītaḥ bhīmasenaṁ vihāya adya tvaṁ raṇabhūmeḥ kathaṁ nivṛttaḥ? | idaṁ yadi dvaitavane ’py acakṣaḥ—“karṇaṁ yoddhuṁ na praśakṣye” iti—vayaṁ tataḥ prāptakālaṁ ca sarve kṛtyāny upaiṣyāma tathāiva pārtha |

Sañjaya sprach: „In Dvaitavana hast du einst ein wahrhaftiges Gelübde abgelegt: ‚Mit nur einem Wagen werde ich kämpfen und Karṇa töten.‘ Doch nun, da du dieses Versprechen gebrochen und aus Furcht vor Karṇa Bhīmasena verlassen hast—wie konntest du heute vom Schlachtfeld zurückkehren? O Pārtha, hättest du schon in Dvaitavana eingestanden: ‚Ich vermag nicht gegen Karṇa zu kämpfen‘, dann hätten wir alle erkannt, was zur rechten Zeit notwendig war, und entsprechend gehandelt.“
