कर्णवधोत्तरं शल्य-दुर्योधनसंवादः

Aftermath of Karṇa’s Fall: Śalya’s Address to Duryodhana

स्नेहस्त्वया पार्थ कृत: पृथाया गर्भ समाविश्य यथा न साधु । त्यक्त्वा रणे यदपाया: स भीम॑ यज्ञाशक: सूतपुत्र निहन्तुम्‌,'पार्थ! तुमने कुन्तीके गर्भमें निवास करके भी अपने सगे भाईके प्रति ऐसा स्नेह निभाया, जिसे कोई अच्छा नहीं कह सकता; क्योंकि जब तुम सूतपुत्र कर्णके मारनेमें समर्थ न हो सके, तब भीमसेनको अकेले रणभूमिमें छोड़कर स्वयं वहाँसे चले आये

snehastvayā pārtha kṛtaḥ pṛthāyā garbha samāviśya yathā na sādhu | tyaktvā raṇe yadapāyāḥ sa bhīmaṁ yajāśakaḥ sūtaputraṁ nihantum ||

Sañjaya sprach: „O Pārtha! Die ‘Zuneigung’, die du gezeigt hast—obwohl du selbst in den Schoß der Pṛthā (Kuntī) eingegangen und als ihr Sohn geboren wurdest—kann nicht als lobenswert gelten. Denn als du dich außerstande sahst, Karṇa, den Sohn des Wagenlenkers, zu töten, zogst du dich vom Schlachtfeld zurück und ließest Bhīmasena dort allein.“

The verse frames a moral critique: kinship and claimed loyalty are hollow if one abandons comrades in crisis. In a dharma-yuddha context, a warrior’s duty includes steadfastness—especially not deserting an ally on the battlefield when one’s own objective (slaying the chief foe) fails.
