The Crow-and-Swan Exemplum as Counsel to Karṇa
एवं तदभवद् युद्ध त्वदीयानां परै: सह । अपराह्नले महाराज काडृक्षतां विजयं युधि,महाराज! इस प्रकार अपराह्नके समय रणक्षेत्रमें विजय चाहनेवाले आपके योद्धाओंका शत्रुओंके साथ भीषण युद्ध होने लगा
sañjaya uvāca |
evaṃ tad abhavad yuddhaṃ tvadīyānāṃ paraiḥ saha |
aparāhṇe le mahārāja kāṅkṣatāṃ vijayaṃ yudhi ||
Sañjaya sprach: So begab es sich, o großer König, dass am späten Nachmittag eine grimmige Schlacht zwischen deinen Kriegern und ihren Feinden entbrannte. Deine Männer, nach dem Sieg im Kampf verlangend, drängten auf dem Feld der Schlacht unaufhaltsam vor.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights how the craving for victory drives warriors into escalating violence; it frames battle as a consequence of intent and ambition, reminding the listener (the king) that outcomes arise from collective choices rather than mere chance.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that, as the day advanced into late afternoon, a severe clash broke out between the Kaurava forces (the king’s men) and their opponents, with the Kauravas striving for victory on the battlefield.
