कर्णस्य दानप्रतिज्ञा–शल्योपदेश–वाक्ययुद्धम्

जीवतश्न तथैवान्य: शस्त्र काये न्यमज्जयत् । राजन! दूसरा सैनिक किसी गिरते हुए योद्धाका सिर अपनी तलवारसे काट लेता था और कोई जीवित शत्रुके ही शरीरमें अपना शस्त्र घुसेड़ देता था
jīvataś ca tathaivānyaḥ śastraṃ kāye nyamajjayat |
Sañjaya sprach: „Und ebenso, o König, stieß ein anderer Krieger seine Waffe tief in den Leib eines Feindes, der noch lebte.“ Die Szene unterstreicht die unablässige Wildheit der Schlacht, in der die gewöhnlichen Schranken des Mitgefühls von den unmittelbaren Forderungen des Kampfes und des Überlebens überblendet werden.
