Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Sañjaya Dialogue: Praise of the Host and Inquiry after the Breach
तत: शड्खमुपाध्माय त्वरयन् वाजिन: स्वयम् | इतस्ततस्तान् रचयन् द्रोणश्चरति वेगित:,तदनन्तर द्रोणाचार्य शंख बजाकर स्वयं ही अपने घोड़ोंको उतावलीके साथ हाँकते और उन सैनिकोंका व्यूह-निर्माण करते हुए इधर-उधर बड़े वेगसे विचर रहे थे
tataḥ śaṅkham upādhmāya tvarayan vājinaḥ svayam | itas tatas tān racayan droṇaś carati vegitaḥ ||
Sañjaya sprach: Dann, nachdem er sein Muschelhorn erschallen ließ, trieb Droṇa selbst in Eile seine Pferde an; rasch hierhin und dorthin eilend, ordnete er jene Truppen unablässig zur Schlachtordnung.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the commander’s role in maintaining order and momentum in battle: clear signals (the conch), personal leadership, and rapid organization of troops. Ethically, it reflects how duty and discipline operate within war, even when the broader conflict raises questions of dharma.
Sañjaya describes Droṇa sounding his conch and personally driving his chariot team with urgency while moving about the battlefield, arranging the soldiers into a battle formation (vyūha).
