एवमुकत्वा ततो राज्ये स्थापयित्वा जयद्रथम्‌ | वृद्धक्षत्रो वनं यातस्तपश्चोग्रं समास्थित:,“ऐसा कहकर समय आनेपर वृद्धक्षत्रने जयद्रथको राज्य सिंहासनपर स्थापित कर दिया और स्वयं वनमें जाकर वे उग्र तपस्यामें संलग्न हो गये

evam uktvā tato rājye sthāpayitvā jayadratham | vṛddhakṣatro vanaṃ yātas tapaś cograṃ samāsthitaḥ ||

Sañjaya sprach: Nachdem er so geredet hatte, setzte Vṛddhakṣatra, als die Zeit gekommen war, Jayadratha auf den Thron des Reiches. Dann zog er selbst in den Wald und nahm eine strenge, harte Askese auf sich—er wählte Entsagung und geistige Zucht, nachdem er die Nachfolge gesichert hatte.
