Even the presence of great elders and commanders cannot automatically sustain dharmic resolve; when fear spreads and purpose weakens, an army may collapse into flight. The verse highlights the ethical and psychological dimension of war—leadership must be matched by collective courage and clarity of aim.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the army is fleeing. Droṇa and Bhīṣma are present and attempt to restrain or rally the troops, yet the soldiers continue to run away right before them, indicating a moment of rout and loss of cohesion.
