भीष्मधनंजयद्वैरथम्
Bhīṣma–Dhanaṃjaya Duel and the Opening Clash
चलद्बहुपताकेन बलाकावर्णवाजिना । समुच्छितमहाभीमनदद्वानरकेतुना,प्रायाच्छरणद: शीघ्र सुहृदां हर्षवर्धन: । उस रथपर बहुत-सी पताकाएँ फहरा रही थीं। उसमें बकपंक्तिके समान श्वेतवर्णवाले चार घोड़े जुते हुए थे। उसके अत्यन्त ऊँचे ध्वजके ऊपर एक वानर भयंकर गर्जना करता था। उस रथके पहियोंकी घरघराहट मेघकी गर्जनाके समान गम्भीर थी तथा वह रथ अनन्त तेज (कान्ति)-से सम्पन्न था। उस विशाल रथपर आरूढ़ हो पाण्डुनन्दन अर्जुन, जो सबको शरण देनेवाले और सुहृदोंका आनन्द बढ़ानेवाले थे, कौरव-सेना एवं शूरसेन-देशीय योद्धाओंका वध करते हुए शीघ्रतापूर्वक भीष्मके पास गये
sañjaya uvāca | calad-bahu-patākena balākā-varṇa-vājinā | samucchita-mahā-bhīma-nadad-vānara-ketunā | prāyāc charaṇadaḥ śīghraṃ suhṛdāṃ harṣa-vardhanaḥ |
Sañjaya sagte: Viele Banner flatterten an dem Wagen; gezogen wurde er von Pferden, weiß wie eine Reihe von Kranichen, und gekrönt von einem hohen Feldzeichen, das einen Affen trug, der furchtbar brüllte. So stürmte der Wagen rasch voran. Auf diesem großen Gefährt fuhr Arjuna—Zuflucht der Schutzsuchenden und Mehrer der Freude seiner Freunde—eilends auf Bhīṣma zu und streckte unterwegs die Krieger des Kaurava-Heeres nieder.
