Even when discussing renunciation, one should not give up purifying duties—sacrifice (yajña), charity (dāna), and austerity (tapas). These actions cleanse the mind and character of the wise and support righteous living.
In the midst of the larger war-context of the Bhīṣma Parva, the discourse turns to ethical discipline: Arjuna states that certain foundational religious-ethical practices should remain obligatory rather than being abandoned in the name of renunciation.
