Counter-deployment of Divisions and the Opening Tumult
पुरोहिता: शत्रुवधं वदन्तो ब्रह्मर्षिसिद्धा: श्रुतववन्त एनम् । जप्यैश्न मन्त्रैश्न महौषधीभि: समन्ततः स्वस्त्ययनं ब्रुवन्त:,शास्त्रोंके विद्वान पुरोहित, ब्रह्मर्षि और सिद्धणण जप, मन्त्र तथा उत्तम ओषधियोंद्वारा सब ओरसे युधिष्ठिरके कल्याण और शत्रुओंके संहारका शुभ आशीर्वाद देने लगे
sañjaya uvāca | purohitāḥ śatruvadhaṃ vadanto brahmarṣi-siddhāḥ śrutavanto enam | japyaiś ca mantraiś ca mahauṣadhībhiḥ samantataḥ svastyayanaṃ bruvantaḥ ||
Sañjaya sprach: Die gelehrten Priester, zusammen mit Brahmarishis und vollendeten Siddhas, sprachen Segensworte für die Vernichtung des Feindes. Mit heiligen Rezitationen (Japa), machtvollen Mantras und großen Heilkräutern riefen sie von allen Seiten glückverheißenden Schutz für ihn herbei und erbaten sein Wohlergehen und seinen Sieg.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the traditional dharmic support system around righteous warfare: victory is sought not only through arms but through disciplined sacred speech (japa, mantra), protective rites (svastyayana), and well-being measures (herbs). It frames battle as an arena where ethical intention and auspicious conduct are ritually reinforced.
Sañjaya reports that priests and spiritually accomplished figures are performing recitations and protective benedictions, invoking welfare and success—specifically the defeat of enemies—for the leader they are supporting (contextually the Pāṇḍava side, especially Yudhiṣṭhira).
