शृणु मे विस्तरेणेदं विचित्र परमाद्भुतम् । भरतानामभूद् युद्ध यथा तल्लोमहर्षणम्,राजन! जिनके कृपाप्रसादसे मुझे परम उत्तम दिव्य ज्ञान प्राप्त हुआ है, इन्द्रियातीत विषयको भी प्रत्यक्ष देखनेवाली दृष्टि मिली है, दूरसे भी सब कुछ सुननेकी शक्ति, दूसरेके मनकी बातोंको समझ लेनेकी सामर्थ्य, भूत और भविष्यका ज्ञान, शास्त्रके विपरीत चलनेवाले मनुष्योंकी उत्पत्तिका ज्ञान, आकाशमें चलने-फिरनेकी उत्तम शक्ति तथा युद्धके समय अस्त्रोंसे अपने शरीरके अछूते रहनेका अद्भुत चमत्कार आदि बातें जिन महात्माके वरदानसे मेरे लिये सम्भव हुई हैं, उन्हीं आपके पिता पराशरनन्दन बुद्धिमान् व्यासजीको नमस्कार करके भरतवंशियोंके इस अत्यन्त अद्भुत, विचित्र एवं रोमांचकारी युद्धका वर्णन आरम्भ करता हूँ। आप मुझसे यह सब कुछ जिस प्रकार हुआ था, वह विस्तारपूर्वक सुनें

Sañjaya sprach: O König, höre mich ausführlich an in diesem wunderbaren und höchst erstaunlichen Bericht—wie der Krieg der Bhāratas zustande kam, so seltsam und ehrfurchtgebietend, dass er das Haar zu Berge stehen lässt. Nachdem ich mich zuvor vor dem weisen Vyāsa—dem Sohn Parāśaras—verneigt habe, durch dessen Gnade ich göttliches Wissen und außergewöhnliche Wahrnehmungskräfte erlangte, beginne ich nun, diesen herrlichen und erschütternden Krieg des Bharata-Geschlechts genau so zu schildern, wie er sich ereignete.
