एतद्‌ वाक्‍्यं सौहृददादापगेयो मध्ये राज्ञां भारतं श्रावयित्वा । तूष्णीमासीच्छल्यसंतप्तमर्मा योज्यात्मानं वेदनां संनियम्य,गंगानन्दन भीष्म समस्त राजाओंके बीच सौहार्दवश दुर्योधनको यह बात सुनाकर मौन हो गये। बाणोंसे उनके मर्मस्थलोंमें अत्यन्त पीड़ा हो रही थी। उन्होंने उस व्यथाको किसी प्रकार काबूमें करके अपने मनको परमात्माके चिन्तनमें लगा दिया

etad vākyaṃ sauhṛdadād āpageyo madhye rājñāṃ bhārataṃ śrāvayitvā | tūṣṇīm āsīc chalyasaṃtaptamarmā yojyātmānaṃ vedanāṃ saṃniyamya ||

Sañjaya sprach: Aus Wohlwollen überbrachte Bhīṣma—der Sohn der Gaṅgā—diese Botschaft inmitten der versammelten Könige an Duryodhana und schwieg dann. Seine Lebenspunkte brannten im Schmerz der Pfeile; doch indem er dieses Leid zügelte, sammelte er seinen Geist und richtete ihn auf die Betrachtung des höchsten Selbst.
