शिखण्डी तु रणे राजन् विव्याधैव पितामहम् । शरैरशनिसंस्पर्शैस्तथा सर्पविषोपमै:,महाराज! उस समय रणक्षेत्रमें शिखण्डी वज्रके समान स्पर्शवाले तथा सर्पविषके समान भयंकर बाणोंद्वारा पितामह भीष्मको घायल करने लगा
sañjaya uvāca | śikhaṇḍī tu raṇe rājan vivyādhaiva pitāmaham | śarair aśani-saṃsparśais tathā sarpa-viṣopamaiḥ ||
Sañjaya sprach: O König, mitten im Getümmel begann Śikhaṇḍī den Ahn Bhīṣma mit Pfeilen zu durchbohren—im Schlag wie die Berührung des Donnerkeils und schrecklich wie Schlangengift—und zeigte damit, dass im Krieg selbst der ehrwürdigste Älteste angegriffen werden kann, wenn sich die Strömung der Strategie und alter Feindschaft gegen ihn wendet.
