Adhyāya 90: Babhruvāhana’s Reception and the Commencement of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Aśvamedha
यदा दानरुचि: स्याद् वै तदा धर्मो न सीदति । अनवेक्ष्य सुतस्नेहं कलत्रस्नेहमेव च
yadā dānaruciḥ syād vai tadā dharmo na sīdati | anavekṣya sutasnehaṃ kalatrasnehameva ca ||
Wenn die Neigung zum Geben erwacht, dann sinkt der Dharma nicht. Man soll geben, ohne sich durch die Liebe zu den Kindern aufhalten zu lassen, ja auch nicht durch die Liebe zum Ehepartner.
श्षशुर उवाच
True giving sustains dharma: when the impulse to charity arises, one should not let familial attachments—love for children or spouse—become an excuse to withhold what ought to be given.
A father-in-law figure offers moral counsel, emphasizing that generosity is a pillar of dharma and should be practiced decisively, without being obstructed by domestic attachments.
