पितृशोकाभिसंतप्तो विषादार्तोडस्य वै पिता
pitṛśokābhisaṃtapto viṣādārto ’dasya vai pitā

वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the human cost of conflict and loss: even when events are framed within dharma and royal duty, grief and despair arise naturally. It implicitly calls for compassion and ethical reflection on the suffering borne by families.
Vaiśaṃpāyana describes a father who is devastated—both inwardly scorched by grief for his son and outwardly sunk in despondency—setting the emotional context for the ensuing actions or dialogue.
