पुरा वरान्‌ प्रत्यवरान्‌ गरीयसो यावन्नरा नावमंस्यन्ति सर्वे तमोत्तरं यावदिदं न वर्तते तावद्‌ व्रजामि परलोकं॑ चिराय,“जबतक सभी श्रेष्ठ मनुष्य महान्‌ पुरुषोंकी नीचोंके समान अवहेलना नहीं करते हैं तथा जबतक इस संसारमें अज्ञानजनित तमोगुणका बाहुल्‍्य नहीं हो जाता, इसके पहले ही मैं चिरकालके लिये परलोक चला जाऊँ

Transliteration

purā varān pratyavarān garīyaso yāvan narā nāvamasyanti sarve tamottaraṃ yāvad idaṃ na vartate tāvad vrajāmi paralokaṃ cirāya |

Translation

Bhishma sprach: „Bevor die Zeit kommt, da die Menschen die wahrhaft Großen nicht mehr ehren und sie wie Niedrige verächtlich behandeln, und bevor diese Welt von der aus Unwissen geborenen Finsternis überwältigt wird, werde ich für lange Zeit in die jenseitige Welt gehen.“
