दानफलप्रकरणम् — उपानहदानं, तिलदानं, भूमिदानं, गोदानं, अन्नदानं च

Gifts and Their Stated Results: Footwear, Sesame, Land, Cows, and Food

इत्येतत्‌ क्षत्रबन्धूनां वदन्ति परमां श्रियम्‌ धर्मशास्त्रोंका सिद्धान्त है कि जैसा दान किया जाता है, वैसा ही भोग मिलता है। संग्राममें शरीरका त्याग करना तथा इस पृथ्वीका दान करना--ये दोनों ही कार्य क्षत्रियोंको उत्तम लक्ष्मीकी प्राप्ति करानेवाले होते हैं,विधूय कलुषं सर्व विरजा: सम्मत: सताम्‌ | लोके महीयते सद्धियों ददाति वसुन्धराम्‌ जो वसुधाका दान करता है, वह अपने सब पापोंका नाश करके निर्मल एवं सत्पुरुषोंके आदरका पात्र हो जाता है तथा लोकमें सज्जन पुरुष सदा ही उसका सत्कार करते हैं

ity etat kṣatrabandhūnāṃ vadanti paramāṃ śriyam | vidhūya kaluṣaṃ sarvaṃ virajāḥ sammataḥ satām | loke mahīyate sadbhiḥ yo dadāti vasundharām ||

Bhīṣma sprach: „So verkünden sie den höchsten Wohlstand für die aus dem kṣatriya-Geschlecht. Wer die Erde (Land) als Gabe schenkt — nachdem er jeden Makel der Sünde abgeschüttelt hat — wird makellos, von den Tugendhaften gebilligt und in der Welt von den Guten geehrt.“

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that gifting land (vasundharā-dāna) is regarded as a supreme form of prosperity and merit for kṣatriyas: it purifies the giver from moral stains and brings esteem among the virtuous and honor in society.

In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma, especially the ethics and fruits of various gifts. Here he highlights the exceptional religious and social value attributed to donating land.
