Daiva–Puruṣakāra Inquiry: Fate and Human Effort
इस प्रकार श्रीमह्याभारत अनुशासनपर्वके अन्तर्गत दानधर्मपर्वमें शुक और इन्द्रका संवादविषयक पाँचवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ,ब्रह्मोवाच (बीजतो हाड्कुरोत्पत्तिरड्कुरात् पर्णसम्भव: । पर्णान्नाला: प्रसूयन्ते नालात् स्कन्ध: प्रवर्तते ।। स्कन्धात् प्रवर्तते पुष्पं पुष्पान्निर्वर्तती फलम् । फलानिरर्वर्यतेी बीजं॑ बीज॑ नाफलमुच्यते ।।) ब्रह्माजीने कहा--मुने! बीजसे अंकुरकी उत्पत्ति होती है, अंकुरसे पत्ते होते हैं। पत्तोंस नाल, नालसे तने और डालियाँ होती हैं। उनसे पुष्प प्रकट होता है। फ़ूलसे फल लगता है और फलसे बीज उत्पन्न होता है और बीज कभी निष्फल नहीं बताया गया है ।। नाबीजं जायते किंचिन्न बीजेन बिना फलम् | बीजादू बीज॑ प्रभवति बीजादेव फलं स्मृतम् बीजके बिना कुछ भी पैदा नहीं होता, बीजके बिना फल भी नहीं लगता। बीजसे बीज प्रकट होता है और बीजसे ही फलकी उत्पत्ति मानी जाती है

bījato 'ṅkurotpattir aṅkurāt parṇa-sambhavaḥ |
parṇān nālāḥ prasūyante nālāt skandhaḥ pravartate ||
skandhāt pravartate puṣpaṁ puṣpān nirvartate phalam |
phalān nirvartate bījaṁ bījaṁ na aphalam ucyate ||
na bījaṁ jāyate kiñcin na bījena vinā phalam |
bījād bījaṁ prabhavati bījād eva phalaṁ smṛtam ||
Brahmā sprach: „O Weiser, aus dem Samen entsteht der Keim; aus dem Keim werden Blätter. Aus den Blättern wachsen Stiele; aus den Stielen bildet sich der Stamm. Aus dem Stamm erscheinen Blüten; aus den Blüten wird Frucht; und aus der Frucht entsteht wiederum der Same—darum wird der Same niemals als unfruchtbar bezeichnet. Nichts wird ohne Samen geboren, und ohne Samen gibt es keine Frucht. Aus Samen entsteht Samen, und aus Samen allein, so gilt es, kommt die Frucht.“

The verse teaches a strict principle of causality: results (phala) arise from causes (bīja). Just as seed leads to sprout, flower, fruit, and again seed, ethical actions—especially dāna and dharmic conduct—are ‘seeds’ that inevitably mature into corresponding outcomes.
