Dāna-Śreṣṭhatā: Abhaya, Anugraha, and the Ethics of Honoring the Worthy (दानश्रेष्ठता: अभय-अनुग्रह-विप्रपूजा)

मुनिपुंगव! इक्कीस दिनोंतक एक करवटसे सोते रहना

Kuśika uvāca: Munipuṅgava! ekaviṁśati-dināni eka-karvaṭena śete, tata utthāya kiñcid apy anuktvā bahiḥ prayāti, sahasā antarhitaḥ bhavati, punaḥ darśanaṁ dadāti; punaḥ ekaviṁśati-dināni dvitīya-karvaṭena śete; utthāya tailābhyangaṁ kārayati; abhyaktaḥ san prayāti; punaḥ mama mahale nānā-vidhāni bhojanāni saṁgṛhya teṣu agniṁ dīpayitvā sarvaṁ dahati; tataḥ sahasā rathena ārūḍhaḥ nagara-paryaṭanaṁ karoti, dhanaṁ vikirati, divya-vanasya darśanaṁ kārayati; tatra bahūni suvarṇa-mayāni prāsādāni prādur-bhāvayati, maṇi-pravāla-pāda-pīṭhāni śayyāsanāni darśayati, ante ca sarvaṁ punar adṛśyaṁ karoti. Mahā-mune! etat sarvaṁ kṛtyaṁ tava yathārtha-kāraṇaṁ śrotum icchāmi. Bhṛgu-kula-ratna! etad vicārayataḥ mama atīva mohaḥ jāyate. Na caivātrādhigacchāmi sarvasyāsya viniścayam; etad icchāmi kārtsnyena satyaṁ śrotuṁ tapodhana.

Kuśika sprach: „O Erster unter den Weisen! Einundzwanzig Tage liegst du auf einer Seite; dann stehst du auf, gehst hinaus, ohne ein Wort zu sagen, verschwindest plötzlich und erscheinst später wieder. Wieder liegst du einundzwanzig Tage auf der anderen Seite; dann stehst du auf, lässt dich mit Öl massieren und gehst, nachdem du gesalbt bist, davon. Dann kehrst du in meinen Palast zurück, sammelst vielerlei Speisen, zündest sie an und verbrennst sie. Als Nächstes besteigst du unvermittelt einen Wagen, fährst außerhalb der Stadt umher, streust Reichtümer aus, zeigst einen wunderbaren Wald und lässt dort viele goldene Paläste erscheinen; du zeigst Lagerstätten, deren Füße mit Edelsteinen und Korallen eingelegt sind, und am Ende lässt du alles wieder verschwinden. Großer Weiser! Ich wünsche den wahren Grund all dieser Taten zu hören. Juwel des Geschlechts Bhṛgus! Wenn ich darüber nachsinne, überkommt mich tiefe Verwirrung. Selbst nach allem Erwägen gelange ich zu keinem Entschluss; darum, o Asket reich an Askese, begehre ich die ganze Wahrheit vollständig zu hören.“
