Varṇasaṃkara: Causes, Classifications, and Conduct-based Recognition (वर्णसंकरः—हेतु-जाति-आचारनिर्णयः)

असदेव हि धर्मस्य प्रदानं धर्म आसुर: । नानुशुश्रुम जात्वेतामिमां पूर्वेषु कर्मसु

Bhīṣma uvāca: asad eva hi dharmasya pradānaṃ dharma āsuraḥ | nānuśuśruma jātvetām imāṃ pūrveṣu karmasu | striyaḥ sadā pitā pati vā putrāṇāṃ rakṣaṇeṣuiva tiṣṭhanti, na svatantrā bhavanti | eṣa purātano dharmaḥ | asya dharmasya khaṇḍanaṃ asat-karma vā āsura-dharmaḥ | pūrvakāle vṛddhaiḥ vivāha-kāle kadācit asyā āsuryāḥ paddhateḥ ācaritaṃ na śrutam iti |

Bhishma sagte: „Wegzugeben, was nicht das Eigene ist, ist wahrlich adharma; es ist eine asurische Form von ‘dharma’. Nie haben wir gehört, dass diese Praxis in den Taten der Ältesten früherer Zeiten befolgt worden sei. Nach der überlieferten Ordnung steht die Frau unter dem Schutz ihres Vaters, oder ihres Gatten, oder ihrer Söhne; sie gilt nicht als unabhängig. Dies ist die uralte Regel des rechten Wandels. Sie zu brechen ist ein verkehrtes Tun — ein asurischer ‘dharma’. In früheren Zeitaltern haben wir nicht gehört, dass ehrwürdige Älteste bei der Eheschließung eine solche asurische Methode angenommen hätten.“
