त्रीणि वर्षाण्युदी क्षेत्र कन्या ऋतुमती सती । चतुर्थे त्वथ सम्प्राप्ते स्वयं भर्तारमर्जयेत्‌,(यदि पिता, भ्राता आदि अभिभावक ऋतुमती होनेके पहले कन्याका विवाह न कर दें तो) ऋतुमती होनेके पश्चात्‌ तीन वर्षतक कन्या अपने विवाहकी बाट देखे। चौथा वर्ष लगनेपर वह स्वयं ही किसीको अपना पति बना ले

trīṇi varṣāṇy udīkṣeta kanyā ṛtumatī satī | caturthe tv atha samprāpte svayaṃ bhartāram arjayet ||

Bhīṣma sprach: „Wenn ein Mädchen die Geschlechtsreife erlangt hat und unverheiratet bleibt, soll es drei Jahre warten, damit eine passende Ehe arrangiert werde. Wenn das vierte Jahr eintritt, darf sie aus eigenem Entschluss einen Gatten für sich gewinnen.“
