भीष्म उवाच इदं शृणु महाप्राज्ञ धर्मपुत्र महायश: । इतिहासं पुरावृत्तं शरणार्थ महाफलम्‌,भीष्मजीने कहा--महाप्राज्ञ, महायशस्वी धर्मपुत्र युधिष्ठिर! शरणागतकी रक्षा करनेसे जो महान्‌ फल प्राप्त होता है, उसके विषयमें तुम यह एक प्राचीन इतिहास सुनो

bhīṣma uvāca idaṃ śṛṇu mahāprājña dharmaputra mahāyaśaḥ | itihāsaṃ purāvṛttaṃ śaraṇārtha mahāphalam ||

Bhīṣma sprach: „Höre dies, o hochweiser und ruhmreicher Sohn des Dharma. Ich will dir eine alte Begebenheit aus vergangenen Zeiten erzählen, die die große Frucht offenbart, die aus dem Schutz dessen erwächst, der Zuflucht sucht.“
