Aṣṭāvakra–Strī-saṃvāda: Dhṛti, hospitality, and a dispute on autonomy

अतिथिं समनुप्राप्तमभिजानन्तु येजत्र वै । अथ कन्या: परिवृता गृहात्‌ तस्माद्‌ विनिर्गता:,“इस घरमें जो लोग रहते हों, उन्हें यह विदित होना चाहिये कि मैं एक अतिथि यहाँ आया हूँ।” उनके इस प्रकार कहते ही उस घरसे एक साथ सात कन्याएँ निकलीं। वे सब- की-सब भिन्न-भिन्न रूपवाली तथा बड़ी मनोहर थीं। विभो! अष्टावक्र मुनि उनमेंसे जिस- जिस कनन्‍्याकी ओर देखते, वही-वही उनका मन हर लेती थी

atithiṃ samanuprāptam abhijānantu yejatrā vai | atha kanyāḥ parivṛtā gṛhāt tasmād vinirgatāḥ ||

Bhishma sprach: „Mögen die Würdigen dieses Hauses erkennen, dass ein atithi—ein unangekündigter Gast—hier eingetroffen ist.“ Als er so sprach, traten aus jenem Haus zugleich sieben Jungfrauen hervor. Jede besaß eine eigene, besondere Schönheit und war überaus anmutig. O Mächtiger, auf welche Jungfrau der Weise Aṣṭāvakra auch blickte, eben sie raubte ihm den Sinn—und so wird sowohl die Macht der Sinnesobjekte als auch die ethische Pflicht des Hausherrn sichtbar, den unerwarteten Gast zu erkennen und zu ehren.
