इदमाश्चर्यमासीच्च मध्ये तेषां महात्मनाम् । सहितैरऋषिभि: सर्वैस्तदा व्यासादिभि: प्रभो,प्रभो! उस समय वहाँ एकत्र हुए सभी संत-महात्माओंके बीच एक बड़े आश्वर्यकी घटना घटी। व्यास आदि सब महर्षियोंने देखा कि योगयुक्त हुए शान्तनुनन्दन भीष्मके प्राण उनके जिस-जिस अंगको त्यागकर ऊपर उठते थे, उस-उस अंगके बाण अपने-आप निकल जाते और उनका घाव भर जाता था
idam āścaryam āsīc ca madhye teṣāṃ mahātmanām | sahitair ṛṣibhiḥ sarvais tadā vyāsādibhiḥ prabho prabho ||
Vaiśampāyana sagte: „O Herr, o Herr! Inmitten jener großherzigen Weisen ereignete sich ein Wunder. Alle dort versammelten Seher—angeführt von Vyāsa und anderen—sahen, dass, sooft Bhīṣma, Śāntanus Sohn, in yogischer Versenkung den Lebenshauch nach oben steigen ließ und dabei einen Körperteil nach dem anderen verließ, die in eben diesem Teil steckenden Pfeile von selbst herausglitten und die Wunde sich schloss.“
