मनुष्यान्‌ शिवमन्विच्छंस्तस्मादेष शिव: स्मृत: । अथवा उनकी जटाका रूप धूम्र वर्णका है, इसलिये उन्हें 'धूर्जटी' कहते हैं। सब प्रकारके कर्मोद्वारा सब लोगोंकी उन्नति करते हैं और सबका कल्याण चाहते हैं; इसलिये इनका नाम 'शिव' है

Transliteration

manuṣyān śivam anvicchan tasmād eṣa śivaḥ smṛtaḥ |

Translation

Vāyu sprach: „Weil er das Heil und das Gedeihen (śiva) der Menschen sucht, wird er daher als ‘Śiva’ in Erinnerung gehalten.“ Der Abschnitt erläutert weiter, dass man ihn ‘Dhūrjaṭi’ nennt, weil die verfilzten Haarflechten (jaṭā) auf seinem Haupt rauchfarben sind; und weil er durch jede Art von Wirken das Emporsteigen aller fördert und das Wohl aller erstrebt, ist der Name ‘Śiva’ für ihn wahrhaft passend.
