Bhīṣma’s Yogic Departure, Royal Cremation, and Gaṅgā’s Lament
iti śrīmahābhārate anuśāsanaparvaṇi dānadharmaparvaṇi mahāpuruṣa-prastāve aṣṭacatvāriṃśad-adhika-śatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ | (iti) — “Thus, in the Śrī Mahābhārata, in the Anuśāsana-parvan, within the Dāna-dharma-parvan, in the section introducing the Mahāpuruṣa, the one-hundred-and-forty-eighth adhyāya is concluded.”
This line is a colophon (closing formula), not a doctrinal verse. It frames the chapter’s ethical focus as dāna-dharma (the duty and proper spirit of giving) and places it within a devotional context that praises Śrī Kṛṣṇa as Mahāpuruṣa.
The narrator Vaiśampāyana signals the conclusion of a chapter in the Anuśāsana Parva. The editorial-style ending identifies the parva and sub-section (dāna-dharma) and notes that the chapter’s context involved introducing/praising Kṛṣṇa as the Mahāpuruṣa.
