मेरा पश्चिमवाला मुख सौम्य है और सम्पूर्ण प्राणियोंको सुख देनेवाला है तथा दक्षिण दिशावाला भयानक मुख रौद्र है, जो समस्त प्रजाका संहार करता है ।। जटिलो ब्रह्मचारी च लोकानां हितकाम्यया । देवकार्यार्थसिद्ध्यर्थ पिनाक॑ मे करे स्थितम्‌,लोगोंके हितकी कामनासे ही मैं जटाधारी ब्रह्मचारीके वेषमें रहता हूँ। देवताओंका हित करनेके लिये पिनाक सदा मेरे हाथमें रहता है

paścimavālaṁ mukhaṁ me saumyaṁ ca sarvaprāṇisukhapradam | dakṣiṇadiśāvālaṁ bhayānakaṁ mukhaṁ raudraṁ ca yat samastaprajāsaṁhārakam || jaṭilo brahmacārī ca lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā | devakāryārthasiddhyarthaṁ pinākaṁ me kare sthitam ||

Bhishma sprach: „Mein Antlitz, das nach Westen gewandt ist, ist sanft und schenkt allen Wesen Glück; doch mein Antlitz, das nach Süden gewandt ist, ist furchtbar und zornentbrannt und bringt Verderben über alle Geschöpfe. Zum Heil der Welten verweile ich in der Gestalt eines brahmacārī-Asketen mit verfilztem Haar; und zur Vollendung des göttlichen Vorhabens ruht der Bogen Pināka stets in meiner Hand.“
