Śama-prāptiḥ — Gautamī–Lubdhaka–Pannaga–Mṛtyu–Kāla-saṃvāda

Restraint through the Analysis of Karma and Time

कुन्तीनन्दन! पूर्वकालमें गौतमी नामवाली एक बूढ़ी ब्राह्मणी थी, जो शान्तिके साधनमें संलग्न रहती थी। एक दिन उसने देखा, उसके इकलौते बेटेको साँपने डेस लिया और उसकी चेतनाशक्ति लुप्त हो गयी ।। अथ त॑ स्नायुपाशेन बद्ध्वा सर्पममर्षित: । लुब्धको<र्जुनको नाम गौतम्या: समुपानयत्‌,इतनेहीमें अर्जुनक नामवाले एक व्याधने उस साँपको ताँतके फाँसमें बाँध लिया और अमर्षवश वह उसे गौतमीके पास ले आया

kuntīnandana! pūrvakāle gautamī nāmavatī ekā vṛddhā brāhmaṇī āsīt, yā śāntisādhanena saṃlagnā tiṣṭhati sma. ekadā sā dadarśa—tasyā ekamātrasya putrasya sarpeṇa daṣṭatvāt tasya cetanāśaktiḥ luptā. atha taṃ snāyupāśena baddhvā sarpam amarṣitaḥ lubdhako 'rjuno nāma gautamyāḥ samupānayat.

Bhishma sprach: „O Sohn der Kuntī, in früheren Zeiten lebte eine betagte Brahmanin namens Gautamī, die den Übungen des Friedens und der Selbstbeherrschung ergeben war. Eines Tages sah sie, dass ihr einziger Sohn von einer Schlange gebissen worden war und das Bewusstsein verloren hatte. Da band ein Jäger namens Arjuna, von Zorn ergriffen, jene Schlange mit einer Schlinge aus Sehnen und brachte sie vor Gautamī.“
