Śukra’s Ultimatum and Devayānī’s Demand (शुक्र-प्रतिज्ञा तथा देवयानी-वर-याचना)

दश प्राचेतस: पुत्रा: सन्त: पुण्यजना: स्मृता: । मुखजेनाग्निना यैस्ते पूर्व दग्थधा महीरुहा:,धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं कीर्तयिष्यामि तेडनघ । वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--निष्पाप जनमेजय! अब मैं दक्ष प्रजापति, वैवस्वत मनु, भरत, कुरु, पूर, अजमीढ, यादव, कौरव तथा भरतवंशियोंकी कुल-परम्पराका तुमसे वर्णन करूँगा। उनका कुल परम पवित्र, महान्‌ मंगलकारी तथा धन, यश और आयुकी प्राप्ति करानेवाला है प्रचेताके दस पुत्र थे, जो अपने तेजके द्वारा सदा प्रकाशित होते थे। वे सब-के-सब महर्षियोंके समान तेजस्वी, सत्पुरुष और पुण्यकर्मा माने गये हैं। उन्होंने पूर्वकालमें अपने मुखसे प्रकट की हुई अग्निद्वारा उन बड़े-बड़े वृक्षोंको जलाकर भस्म कर दिया था (जो प्राणियोंको पीड़ा दे रहे थे)

daśa prācetasaḥ putrāḥ santaḥ puṇyajanāḥ smṛtāḥ | mukhajenāgninā yais te pūrvaṃ dagdhā mahīruhāḥ ||

Vaiśampāyana sprach: „Die zehn Söhne des Pracetas werden als heilige und tugendhafte Männer erinnert. In früherer Zeit verbrannten sie mit dem Feuer, das aus ihren Mündern hervorbrach, die großen Bäume.“
