Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition
दुर्योधनसहायास्ते पौलस्त्या भरतर्षभ । वैश्यापुत्रो युयुत्सुश्न धार्तराष्ट्र: शताधिक:,उसके दुःशासन आदि सौ भाई थे। वे सभी क्रूरतापूर्ण कर्म किया करते थे। दुर्मुख, दुःसह तथा अन्य कौरव जिनका नाम यहाँ नहीं लिया गया है, दुर्योधनके सहायक थे। भरतश्रेष्ठ! धृतराष्ट्रके वे सब पुत्र पूर्वजन्मके राक्षस थे। धृतराष्ट्रपुत्र युयुत्सु वैश्य-जातीय सत्रीसे उत्पन्न हुआ था। वह दुर्योधन आदि सौ भाइयोंके अतिरिक्त था
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
duryodhana-sahāyās te paulastyā bharatarṣabha |
vaiśyā-putro yuyutsuś ca dhārtarāṣṭraḥ śatādhikaḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: „O Stier unter den Bhāratas, jene aus der Linie Paulastyas Geborenen waren Verbündete Duryodhanas. Und Yuyutsu, von einer Vaiśyā-Frau geboren, war ebenfalls ein Dhārtarāṣṭra — sodass die Zahl über hundert hinausging.“
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames moral disposition as rooted in character and origins: Duryodhana’s support-base is depicted as inherently inclined toward cruelty (rākṣasa-like), while Yuyutsu is marked as distinct—suggesting that ethical alignment is not merely familial but chosen and conditioned by one’s nature and associations.
Vaiśampāyana continues a genealogical and descriptive account of Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons and their supporters: most are grouped as Duryodhana’s allies with a demonic characterization, and Yuyutsu is identified separately as Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son by a Vaiśyā woman, making the total number exceed one hundred.
