Duḥṣantasya Vana-praveśaḥ

King Duḥṣanta’s Entry into the Forest Hunt

ब्रह्मणो ब्राह्मणानां च तथानुग्रहकाड्क्षया । विव्यास वेदान्‌ यस्मात्‌ स तस्माद्‌ व्यास इति स्मृत:,विद्वान्‌ द्वैपायनजीने देखा कि प्रत्येक युगमें धर्मका एक-एक पाद लुप्त होता जा रहा है। मनुष्योंकी आयु और शक्ति क्षीण हो चली है और युगकी ऐसी दुरवस्था हो गयी है। यह सब देख-सुनकर उन्होंने वेद और ब्राह्मणोंपर अनुग्रह करनेकी इच्छासे वेदोंका व्यास (विस्तार) किया। इसलिये वे व्यास नामसे विख्यात हुए

brahmaṇo brāhmaṇānāṁ ca tathānugrahakāṅkṣayā | vivyāsa vedān yasmāt sa tasmād vyāsa iti smṛtaḥ ||

In dem Wunsch, Brahmā und den Brahmanen Gunst zu erweisen, ordnete und erweiterte (teilte und gliederte) er die Veden. Weil er die Veden „viyāsa“—also auslegte und aufteilte—, wird er daher mit dem Namen Vyāsa erinnert.
