Faithful listening to, and conscientious recitation of, a dharmic sacred history is itself a high religious act; it yields merit comparable to the greatest royal sacrifices (Rājasūya and Aśvamedha), emphasizing inner devotion and ethical transmission over mere ritual grandeur.
The narrator Vaiśampāyana states a phalaśruti (statement of benefits): he declares the spiritual reward for those who hear this wondrous account and also make others hear it, thereby encouraging attentive reception and responsible teaching of the epic.
