ब्राह्मण (a brāhmaṇa speaker)
याज (the priest/officiant)
गवाम् (cows, as dakṣiṇā)

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores that ritual action (karma) is not casual: it requires proper preparation and competence, and it is embedded in an ethical economy of intention and giving (dakṣiṇā). The patron seeks fulfillment of a vow or desire, while the priest accepts responsibility to perform correctly, supported by an appropriate gift.

A brāhmaṇa asks a priest to conduct a specific sacrifice and promises an enormous sacrificial fee—an arbuda of cows. The priest agrees (“tathāstu”) and begins arranging the necessary ritual components and procedures to accomplish the patron’s intended goal.
