Pāṇḍu’s Śrāddha, Satyavatī’s Withdrawal, and Childhood Rivalry
वानप्रस्थजनस्यापि दर्शनं कुलवासिनाम् | नाप्रियाण्याचरिष्यामि कि पुनर्ग्रामवासिनाम्,मैं वानप्रस्थ आश्रममें रहनेवालोंका तथा कुट॒म्बी-जनोंका भी दर्शन और अप्रिय नहीं करूँगा; फिर ग्रामवासियोंकी तो बात ही क्या है?
vānaprasthajanasya api darśanaṁ kulavāsinām | nāpriyāṇy ā-cariṣyāmi ki punar grāmavāsinām ||
„Selbst den im Wald lebenden Hausvätern im Stadium des vānaprastha und denen, die bei ihrer Familie wohnen, werde ich mich nicht so nähern, dass es ihnen missfällt. Um wie viel mehr muss ich dann vermeiden, die Dorfbewohner zu kränken.“
वैशम्पायन उवाच
One should practice restraint in speech and conduct, taking care not to cause displeasure or harm—especially toward respected groups like vānaprasthas and householders; if such care is due to them, it is even more due to ordinary villagers.
In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a speaker expresses an intention to behave respectfully during visits/encounters, emphasizing that he will not act in ways that offend even forest-dwelling elders and family householders—therefore he will certainly not offend the villagers.
