Pāṇḍu’s Funeral Rites and Public Mourning
पौरवाणां महाराज तेषामक्लिष्टकर्मणाम् | वंशे जातस्य कौरव्य नानुरूपमिदं तव,महाराज! क्लेशरहित कर्म करनेवाले कुरुवंशियोंके कुलमें जन्म लेकर तुमने जो यह कार्य किया है, यह तुम्हारे अनुरूप नहीं है
pauravāṇāṃ mahārāja teṣām akliṣṭakarmaṇām | vaṃśe jātasya kauravya nānurūpam idaṃ tava, mahārāja ||
O großer König, du bist im Geschlecht der Pauravas geboren — Männer, deren Taten nicht durch Grausamkeit oder zugefügtes Leid befleckt sind. O Kauravya, diese Tat, die du begangen hast, ziemt dir nicht, o König.
मृग उवाच
One’s actions should be consistent with dharma and with the ethical standards expected of one’s lineage and role; conduct that causes harm or is ignoble is condemned as ‘not befitting’ a righteous king.
A deer addresses a king from the Kuru/Paurava line and rebukes him for a particular deed, appealing to the reputation of his dynasty and urging behavior worthy of a just ruler.
