Lord Vishnu (narrating to Garuda)

Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni

Concept: Adharma-driven aggression fails where dharma and sacred power operate; the subtle realm obeys higher moral-spiritual laws.

Vedantic Theme: The unseen governance (adṛṣṭa) of karma and the superiority of sattva/puṇya over tamasic forces; protection through sacred merit.

Application: Cultivate dharma and seek refuge in sacred places/recitation; avoid harming the vulnerable—such acts rebound as failure and disgrace.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Type: mountain

FAQs

This verse highlights the preta as a post-death condition where the being moves with subtle, wind-like speed and can become invisible—showing the non-physical nature of the departed and the need for proper rites rather than mere physical pursuit.

It depicts the departed as operating through a subtle mode of movement and perception: even when “reached,” the preta can slip beyond visibility, indicating that the soul’s journey is governed by subtle laws (karma and rites), not ordinary physical constraints.

Treat death-related duties with seriousness: focus on prescribed śrāddha/pinda offerings and ethical living, understanding that the departed cannot be helped by force or chase but by dharmic support and correct ritual care.
