Sense-Discipline and Exclusive Refuge in Viṣṇu
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Vision (darśana) is usually outward and desire-driven; redirected toward bhaktas and Viṣṇu worship, it becomes a means of cutting sorrow and stabilizing the mind.
Vedantic Theme: Saṅga as destiny-shaping: viṣaya-saṅga binds, sat-saṅga liberates; purification of citta through sacred perception (darśana) leading toward śama.
Application: Practice ‘holy seeing’: visit temple or view pūjā with attention; seek satsanga; reduce objectifying gaze; use visual triggers (icons, altar) to redirect attention.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: shringara
Type: temple
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.28.76 (ear and Hari-kathā); Garuda Purana 3.28.78-80 (sexual impulse, shame, food discipline)
This verse contrasts ordinary sense-driven seeing (which fuels attachment and disturbs peace) with sacred darśana—seeing Viṣṇu’s worship—which dissolves sorrow through devotion and right orientation of the mind.
By implying that attachment binds consciousness to restless craving, while devotion to Hari refines perception and loosens grief and bondage—supporting the Purāṇic path where bhakti and worship purify the subtle tendencies that shape one’s post-death journey.
Reduce compulsive sense-consumption and cultivate regular Viṣṇu-pūjā or temple darśana; redirect attention from attachment to devotion, using worship as a daily practice to weaken anxiety and sorrow.
