Lord Viṣṇu (in instruction to Garuḍa)
Concept: Ritual honoring of directional powers, vāstu-deity, and the mahābhūtas as supports of embodied and worldly order.
Vedantic Theme: Interdependence of microcosm (house/body) and macrocosm (deities/elements) as an aid to sattva and right conduct.
Application: In consecrations/household pūjā, begin at the east-facing threshold; offer respectful worship to dikpālas, vāstudevatā, and elements to establish protection and harmony.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Type: threshold/doorway (vāstu)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana (Preta-kalpa/ācāra sections): dikpāla-pūjā and bhūta-śānti motifs recur in ritual preliminaries; Garuda Purana: pañcabhūta and indriya enumerations in cosmology/adhyātma passages
This verse frames doorway worship as a protective and harmonizing rite: invoking Vāstvadhipa (the presiding spirit of the dwelling) and Pavanāstra (a wind-based protective invocation) aligns the home with auspicious forces and removes obstacles at the threshold.
It does not directly describe the soul’s post-death journey; instead, it belongs to the conduct/ritual section, emphasizing correct worship of deities and elements as part of dharmic living that supports spiritual well-being.
Maintain a clean, respected threshold and begin prayers facing or starting from the east; honor the forces of nature (air, earth, water) and household guardianship as a reminder to live responsibly within one’s home and environment.
