Mahāyoga: Detachment from ‘I/Mine’, Aṣṭāṅga Practice, Oṁkāra and Aham-Brahmāsmi Contemplation
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Samsāric recurrence across many states; bondage returns when ajñāna obscures knowledge of the Supreme Self—hence vigilance in sustaining realization.
Vedantic Theme: Ajñāna/avidyā as the root of saṃsāra; necessity of niṣṭhā (steadfast abidance) after insight; saṃskāra resurgence if knowledge is not stabilized.
Application: After insight, maintain steady practice (śravaṇa–manana–nididhyāsana, ethical restraint, satsanga) to prevent relapse into habitual identification; treat confusion as a signal to return to inquiry and devotion.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.226.31-33 (knowledge-affirmation as liberation); Garuda Purana 1.226.34 (aṣṭāṅga and duties as supports)
This verse presents ajñāna as the core cause of repeated birth: when true knowledge of the Supreme Self is obscured, the being returns to bondage even after experiencing release.
It depicts the soul’s journey as repeated movement through many births and states, with liberation depending on stable realization (jñāna); ignorance pulls the jiva back into saṃsāra.
Cultivate steady self-knowledge through disciplined living, study, and ethical conduct so that clarity replaces delusion and one does not fall back into harmful patterns.
