Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Concept: True worship is offering inner virtues—dharma, jñāna, vairāgya, aiśvarya—along with ritual acts performed ‘from the heart’.

Vedantic Theme: Sādhana-catuṣṭaya-like orientation (vairāgya, jñāna) integrated with upāsanā; purification leading toward liberation.

Application: Treat daily puja as character-cultivation: consciously offer one ethical act (dharma), one study/reflection (jñāna), one letting-go (vairāgya), and one disciplined mastery (aiśvarya) before external offerings.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Type: inner sanctum (antar-garbha)

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.22.5 (heart-lotus worship seat); Garuda Purana 1.22.7 (ācāmana/snāpana/pujā unity; fire-rite)

FAQs

This verse emphasizes that true worship is anchored in inner virtues—dharma, knowledge, and detachment—while ritual steps like āvāhana and pādya become heartfelt offerings rather than mere external acts.

By pairing ritual components with inner qualities (dharma–jñāna–vairāgya), the verse frames worship as a discipline that purifies intention and reduces attachment—key conditions for liberation.

When performing pūjā (or any sacred act), consciously cultivate ethical conduct, study, and detachment, and mentally offer each step—invocation, honoring, and respect—sincerely “from the heart.”
