या गतिर्दैत्यशार्दूल हतानां तु महाहवे ततो ऽदिकां गतिं यान्ति विष्णुभक्ता नरोत्तमाः

Transliteration

yā gatirdaityaśārdūla hatānāṃ tu mahāhave tato 'dikāṃ gatiṃ yānti viṣṇubhaktā narottamāḥ

Translation

হে দৈত্যশার্দূল! মহাযুদ্ধে নিহতদের যে গতি হয়, তার চেয়েও উচ্চতর গতি বিষ্ণুভক্ত—নরশ্রেষ্ঠরা—লাভ করে।

What is the ‘gati’ of those slain in battle that is being surpassed?

Purāṇic and epic traditions often praise heroic death as yielding an elevated heavenly state. This verse acknowledges that merit but asserts Viṣṇu-bhakti grants an even higher destiny—implying proximity to Viṣṇu or liberation rather than merely svarga-like reward.

Does this devalue dharma-yuddha (righteous war)?

It relativizes it. Martial righteousness can yield high results, but the text places devotional surrender above even the most celebrated worldly dharma, making bhakti the supreme criterion of spiritual attainment.
