Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature
atha yad duḥkhasaṃyuktam aprītikaram ātmanaḥ | pravṛttaṃ raja ity eva tan na saṃrabhya cintayet ||
Sorrowful, displeasing mental states should be identified as the rise of rajas; instead of feeding them with anxious rumination, one should remain unagitated, since worry intensifies suffering.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on inner discipline and ethical living; here he gives a practical diagnostic: recognize distress as a guṇa-driven movement (rajas) and avoid reactive worry.
