भीष्मजी कहते हैं--राजन्! वे गीध और गीदड़ दोनों ही भूखे थे और अपने उद्देश्यकी सिद्धिके लिये मृतकके बन्धु-बान्धवोंसे बातें करते थे। गीध कहता था कि सूर्य अस्त हो गये और सियार कहता था नहीं ।।
svakāryabaddhakakṣau tau rājan gṛdhro 'tha jambukaḥ | kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntau śāstram ālambya jalpataḥ ||
ভীষ্ম বললেন—হে রাজন! শকুন ও শেয়াল—উভয়েই নিজের নিজের উদ্দেশ্য সিদ্ধ করতে উদ্যত ছিল। ক্ষুধা-পিপাসায় ক্লান্ত হয়ে তারা শাস্ত্রের আশ্রয় নিয়ে তর্ক করছিল—একজন বলল, ‘সূর্য অস্ত গেছে’, অন্যজন বলল, ‘না, যায়নি’।
