उपातिष्ठत धर्मज्ञो भैक्षकाले स देवलम्‌ । जनमेजय! तदनन्तर कुछ कालतक ऐसा हुआ कि देवल मुनिवर जैगीषव्यको हर समय नहीं देख पाते थे। धर्मके ज्ञाता बुद्धिमान्‌ संन्‍न्यासी जैगीषव्य केवल भोजन या भिक्षा लेनेके समय देवलके पास आते थे

upātiṣṭhata dharmajño bhaikṣakāle sa devalam | janamejaya! tadanantaraṃ kiñcit kālaṃ tathābhavat yathā devalo munivar jaigīṣavyaṃ sarvadā na paśyati sma | dharmasya jñātā buddhimān saṃnyāsī jaigīṣavyaḥ kevalaṃ bhojane vā bhaikṣāgrahaṇakāle devalasya samīpam āgacchati sma |

বৈশম্পায়ন বললেন—হে জনমেজয়, কিছু কাল পরে দেবল আর সর্বক্ষণ মুনিবর জৈগীষব্যকে দেখতে পেতেন না। ধর্মজ্ঞ, বুদ্ধিমান সন্ন্যাসী জৈগীষব্য কেবল ভিক্ষাকালে—অন্ন বা ভিক্ষা গ্রহণের সময়েই—দেবল-এর কাছে উপস্থিত হতেন।
