Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how reliance on celebrated weapons, divine gifts, and reputation can be publicly questioned when circumstances turn adverse. It cautions against pride in external supports and shows how quickly glory can be reframed as failure in the moral and psychological pressure of war.

Sañjaya reports a harsh denunciation aimed at Arjuna’s famed advantages—his Gāṇḍīva bow, his mighty arms, his innumerable arrows, his banner bearing Hanumān, and his fire-god-gifted chariot—spoken as a taunt or lament in the midst of the Karṇa-Parva battle, implying that these renowned aids are not producing the expected dominance at that moment.
