कर्णसेनापत्यारम्भः — Karṇa’s Appointment and the Report to Dhṛtarāṣṭra
Chapter 1
दुर्मरं तदहं मन्ये नृणां कृच्छे5पि वर्तताम् यत्र कर्ण हत॑ श्रुत्वा नात्यजज्जीवितं नृप:
durmaraṁ tad ahaṁ manye nṛṇāṁ kṛcche ’pi vartatām | yatra karṇa-hataṁ śrutvā nātyajajjīvitaṁ nṛpaḥ ||
জনমেজয় বললেন—আমি একে প্রায় অসম্ভবই মনে করি যে মানুষ, চরম দুর্দশাতেও, এমন অবস্থা সহ্য করতে পারে যেখানে কর্ণ নিহত হয়েছে—এ কথা শুনেও কোনো রাজা সঙ্গে সঙ্গে প্রাণ ত্যাগ করেন না। এমন সর্বনাশা শোকে এমন সংযম সাধারণ মানবক্ষমতার অতীত বলে মনে হয়।
