FAQs

It points to the deity’s true extent (aiśvarya): the ‘measure’ of Trivikrama is not limited by ordinary spatial standards. The verse contrasts human measurement with divine infinitude, making the three strides ‘ananta’ in effect.

It praises the ideal donor-king: even when the recipient’s greatness is daunting, the vow is upheld without fear. In Purāṇic ethics, the purity of intention and steadfastness in dāna are central to Bali’s enduring renown.

It closes off an objection based on ‘improper measure’ or ‘deception’: Trivikrama asserts that Bali (as the paradigmatic giver in this episode) already acknowledged the divine standard by granting the three strides, thereby validating the act and its outcome.
