Unspecified (vocative 'deveśi' indicates the verse is addressed to a goddess, commonly Pārvatī in Śiva–Pārvatī dialogues)

Concept: During pregnancy, heightened purity and boundary-keeping are prescribed; contact with others’ garments—especially those linked with male association—is treated as a source of doṣa (ritual fault) in this rule-set.

Application: Maintain personal hygiene and clear boundaries in shared clothing/linen during vulnerable periods; treat pregnancy and postpartum as times for extra care, rest, and protective routine.

Primary Rasa: bhayanaka

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A quiet inner household scene: a pregnant woman stands near a wooden chest of garments while an elder or priestly figure gestures in warning, indicating a boundary around certain cloth. The atmosphere is protective and tense, with symbolic motifs—protective threads, a small lamp, and a threshold line—emphasizing liminality and caution.","primary_figures":["Pregnant woman (gṛhiṇī)","Elder instructor/priest figure (or Mahādeva as narrator in symbolic form)"],"setting":"Domestic chamber with garment chest, threshold markings, protective thread (rakṣā-sūtra), and a small shrine niche","lighting_mood":"forest dappled","color_palette":["muted saffron","clay brown","smoke gray","deep maroon","soft ivory"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: a domestic dharma instruction scene—pregnant woman near a garment chest, an authoritative instructor indicating prohibited cloth, gold leaf accents on lamp and shrine niche, rich reds and greens, ornate borders, stylized interior architecture with traditional South Indian patterns.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate household interior with delicate lines, soft pastel textiles, a pregnant woman in profile, an elder explaining purity rules, subtle emotional tension, refined facial features, minimal but lyrical props (lamp, chest, threshold).","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines, simplified interior space, expressive eyes, the gesture of prohibition emphasized, warm red-yellow palette with green accents, ritual objects rendered iconically (lamp, thread, shrine).","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: symbolic domestic purity tableau framed by floral borders and lotus motifs, deep blue background with gold highlights, central figures stylized, shrine lamp and patterned textiles prominent, ornamental symmetry."}

FAQs

It presents a dharma/śauca guideline: a pregnant woman should avoid wearing or even touching another woman’s clothing, with extra caution regarding garments connected with a man.

No. This verse is primarily a conduct-and-purity (śauca) instruction rather than a description of sacred places.

The verse addresses a goddess ('O Goddess'). In the Padma Purana, such address frequently occurs in Mahādeva–Pārvatī style dialogues, though the speaker is not explicit in this single line.
