Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds two ethical tests: fidelity to one’s pledged duty (standing firm at the proper time) and the preservation of familial concord. It implies that dharma is sustained not only by personal self-control and truthfulness in vows, but also by maintaining kinship bonds that restrain escalation into destructive conflict.

Vaiśampāyana frames the situation with concerned questions about the Pāṇḍavas’ resolve to keep their commitment and about whether harmony within the Kuru family will endure. The tone anticipates strain within the dynasty and signals that the unfolding events will test both personal vows and collective brotherhood.
