Educational Q&A

Wealth and the body do not accompany a person after death; only one’s karma—merit and sin—travels with the individual to the next world. Therefore one should prioritize righteous conduct over attachment to possessions.

In Vidura’s counsel (vidura-nīti) within Udyoga Parva, he reminds the listener that death strips away external claims: others take the dead person’s wealth, the body is consumed by nature, and only the moral residue of actions (puṇya and pāpa) remains as the true companion beyond life.
